We’re all becoming increasingly reliant on consumer cloud services, as cloud storage providers like Dropbox make it easy to share and store files, folders, images, sync between platforms, and more. They make our lives easier, but because they store an enormous amount of potentially sensitive data, there are some inherent risks. While Dropbox is for personal use, it and services like it are increasingly being used by businesses — another example of the ongoing consumerization of enterprise and IT.

It’s also true that most people want their data in their cloud service to be synced across all platforms on which they have the app installed, mobile, desktop, etc. So, with individuals and companies storing sensitive data in the cloud, cross-sync can make for some potential security problems, and it’s not really something you want to do at work.

That’s why virtualization provider AppSense has created DataLocker, a set of mobile and desktop apps for iOS, Windows and Mac that enable users to encrypt sensitive information in their Dropbox accounts for free — without giving up the convenience of cross-platform syncing.

DataLocker is the first product from “AppSense Labs,” the company’s new research arm, which is dedicated to building consumer-friendly solutions around cloud, mobile, and data that work within traditional IT infrastructure. As the boundaries between personal and professional computing are blurring, AppSense Labs will look to ride that wave with new products that capitalize on this transition, making it easier on consumers and enterprise, piece by piece.

And to that point, DataLocker is a great first step in alleviating some of the worry over the security of our personal information as it moves about the cloud. With the advent of Apple’s iCloud and Microsoft’s SkyDrive, businesses will have to decide whether these proprietary clouds are something they want to adopt. In iCloud’s case, user accounts are tied to Apple not to businesses, which may lead to some businesses balking at using the service to share sensitive company information.

This is where DataLocker could really come in handy. For now, it’s focused on Dropbox, but there’s potential for it to move beyond Dropbox, even if iCloud/SkyDrive integration isn’t in the cards. Businesses want to use friendly cloud services, and encryption of sensitive data is key to encouraging further adoption.

As to how the app works? It’s fairly straightforward, users simply install the app and link it to their Dropbox accounts, at which point they can upload new files, protect them instantly, while browsing and viewing existing and protected Dropbox files.

AppSense raised $ 70 million from Goldman Sachs a year ago today.

For more, check out the iOS app here.

The Samsung Galaxy Note, a so-called “superphone” that has a massive 5-inch screen, gives quite a first impression. Not only is it huge, but it sports an accessory that has waned in popularity over the last few years: a stylus.

Those odd physical qualities are why we took it out to the streets to see what real people thought when they were suddenly confronted with the gargantuan, pen-toting Galaxy Note (you can see our video below). It seems Samsung’s people thought the idea was good enough to do themselves, and they created a “street challenge” for the Galaxy Note, pitting the company’s quasi-tablet against an iPhone.

Sure, with challenges designed to highlight the Note’s unique features, the video contest is certainly rigged (Spoiler alert: the Galaxy Note wins). But it’s an effective way to highlight the Note’s interesting and sometimes-useful ability to draw on screencaps via the stylus. Can users crop images and then draw on them or even combine them? Yes. Will anyone actually do that? Perhaps. Is it a game-changer? That’s for you to decide. At least the exercise feels more real than that nutty Super Bowl commercial.

SEE ALSO: Samsung Galaxy Note Up For Pre-Order Online At AT&T

Can’t get enough of watching people on the street reacting to the Samsung Galaxy Note? Something tells us this isn’t the last of the street challenges. And of course, you can always check out our review and unboxing to tide you over.

Does Samsung’s new video make you want to take another look at the Galaxy Note? Share your excitement (or whatever) in the comments.

As soon as I am finished with this post, I’m heading to my bunker. It’s well stocked with cheese and wine suggestions from Paul and Grace.

The reason? Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg topped today’s Formula 1 testing in Barcelona. Here are the final times:

Unofficial Wednesday test times from Barcelona:
1. Nico Hulkenberg, Force India, 1:22.608, 112 Laps
2. Sergio Perez, Sauber, 1:22.648, 85 Laps
3. Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull, 1:22.891, 104 Laps
4. Fernando Alonso, Ferrari, 1:23.180, 87 Laps
5. Daniel Ricciardo, Toro Rosso, 1:23.639, 50 Laps
6. Lewis Hamilton, McLaren, 1:23.806, 120 Laps
7. Nico Rosberg, Mercedes, 1:24.555, 82 Laps
8. Valtteri Bottas, Williams, 1:25.738, 117 Laps
9. Vitaly Petrov, Caterham, 1:26.605, 69 Laps
10. Charles Pic, Marussia*, 1:27.343, 108 Laps
* 2011 car

“We started the day with some aero work – trying some constant speed runs and collecting more data,” Hulkenberg said. “Then, the rest of the day was spent working on the balance of the car and trying out all four tyre compounds. I did some short runs, long runs and just got a feel for the tyre characteristics and how the car reacts to them. Once again the car has been very drivable all day and our baseline set-up has proved to be a good starting point for running all the different compounds.”

No mention of whether he’s off to some safety compound.

I plan only to come back out if, in fact, McLaren is back on top and not Force India. Lewis Hamilton has me cautiously optimistic:

“To have completed more than 1000 kilometres in the past two days is incredibly encouraging – the whole team should feel proud,” Hamilton said. “The car behaves really well in the high-speed corners – I think the baseline of our car is higher than it was last year – and it’s better overall at high-speed. It’s performing well in Turns Three and Nine, too.

“We don’t know the fuel-loads of the other cars, so it’s still hard to determine the pecking order. We didn’t bring any upgrades here, but our understanding of the car has developed since the test in Jerez. We’re learning more about how the tyres work, how the temperatures behave and how to balance the car using set-up. It’s been an extremely productive few days – and I think Jenson (Button) will continue to improve the car tomorrow.”

Now, I know, I know. Testing means nothing. You all can keep thinking that. Enjoy your end days.

Share and Enjoy

Because today I’m leaning heavily on the celebrity penis to help push some page views (once again, I know what you guys like: famous cocks). So let’s ride this a little longer — teehee! — with this story about how Adam Levine went on The Howard Stern Show and spoke about how he fully endorses pulling out as a means of contraception. Which, when you consider how politicians everywhere are shitting themselves over the idea that women might want their birth control covered by healthcare the way men have their Viagra covered, might actually be the only form of contraception women can use soon. OK! reports:

“This is the longest, most functional relationship I’ve ever been in,” he told Howard on his show. “I don’t want to screw it up.” Anna reportedly came out of the green room to share her version of how she met Adam. The two met when Maroon 5 was hired to play at a party for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. “He thought I was a stuck-up b**** and I kind of thought he was a d***bag musician,” she explained. In a TMI conversation, Adam revealed he uses “a fool-proof birth-control system,” the pull-out method.

Okay, mind you, studies have shown that when executed perfectly, pulling out has a failure rate of only 4%, which compared to the condom’s 2% is pretty good. That being said, pulling out provides little to no protection when it comes to defending against STDs, so I’d still say using condoms are a safer bet. Yes, they don’t feel as good as unprotected sex, but you know what feels even worse? Gonorrhea!

By Matt Kelley – “The proposal is seriously flawed,” Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley says. “It’s kind of heavy-handed on the part of the federal government and I think it’s unnecessarily costly. Ironically, it would likely slow down the ability of the United States to respond to these cyber threats.”

He says the alternative legislation aims to address cyber-security threats “without the overreaching hand of the government.” Grassley says the focus should be on reforming existing federal government agencies, streamlining regulation and looking for efficiencies that will strengthen the country’s capacity to deal with cyber-attacks. more> http://is.gd/FanNZc

Planck’s constant is a fundamental constant of nature which relates the frequency (color) of a particle of light (a photon) to its energy. By using two quantum mechanical effects discovered in the last 60 years: The Josephson effect and the quantum Hall effect, electrical power can be measured in terms of Planck’s constant (and time).

A Planck-based kilogram would mean a universal standard that could be replicated anywhere in the world at any time. more> http://is.gd/6rUCMo

Today, Reuters reported that the company said it plans to cut 45 percent of its workforce to conserve cash.

LightSquared has been fighting an uphill political battle for the past year to use 40MHz of wireless spectrumit owns or has leased to build a nationwide wireless broadband network that will compete with AT&T and Verizon Wireless. The company received a conditional waiver to use its spectrum to provide terrestrial-only services last January.

But last week the FCC pulled its conditional waiver stating that there were still interference concerns with GPS signals. more> http://is.gd/JaZPV6
